St. John's Lutheran School opened it's door to the children of St. John's Lutheran Church and the community of Algonquin, as well as the surrounding communities, in 1876.
The first teacher of SJS was the pastor of the church, who taught the initial forty-four students Religion, German, Reading, and Math.
Under the leadership of Principal Alfred T. Christian, St. John's outgrew its school building and in 1954 the congregation met in the evenings and on Saturdays and built a new educational building consisting of four classrooms and a gymnasium.
In 1973 St. John's opened a nursery school and Kindergarten. With this new growth the members of St. John's Church began to look toward the future and another building. In 1982 the current Activity Center was opened with a full kitchen, locker rooms, new offices, and a meeting room. This allowed for two new classrooms to be opened in the educational building.
St. John's Lutheran Church and School celebrated its 100th anniversary with the theme "Grace for Grace". God has certainly blessed the members of St. John's Lutheran Church, the students of St. John's Lutheran School and the communities it serves with His grace. We look forward to the blessings and challenges of this new century as we continue to provide a Christ-centered education and a "future filled with hope". Jeremiah 29:11
