ST.  JOHN’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH AND SCHOOL
ALGONQUIN, ILLINOIS

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

About a month ago, June 29, a Prayer Vigil was held at St. John's.  Between 3:00 – 9:00 pm., people came to speak to the Lord from within His house.  Some likely came knowing precisely what they were going to pray for, while others arrived expecting to be guided.  A “script,” graciously provided by the sponsoring Board of In-reach, encouraged prayer for the pastor and his family, for St. John's congregation, it's leaders and various boards, as well as for our witness to our community.  We asked for a pouring out of the Holy Spirit to grow us, individually and corporately, in our work and commitment to furthering God's kingdom.  Of course, I'm not privy to the content of each individual prayer, but I believe I see the answers to many of those prayers, right here, right now.

At our July 17 Voter's Meeting we gathered to consider some challenging financial decisions.  Following discussion, important decisions were made.  Thank you to all who were party to those actions.

But consider what else happened.  [1] As a job description for Youth Activity Director was presented and we again lamented our need for leadership in the this area, DeLynn Griffith and Sarah Wilke stepped forward and emphatically committed to a dedicated effort in this area.  [2] As a committee was authorized to address specific actions for spiritual growth, Linda Muscat confirmed her eagerness to head up such an effort.  [3]  After seven months with out a chairman for our congregation, Bill Yocius resolved to step down as a Trustee to serve as St. John's chairman.  Voters approved.  Bill's commitment was illustrated in his brief “acceptance speech.”  [4]  With the new vacancy on the Board of Trustees, Brian Muscat immediately responded to a simple invitation to serve.

Can God answer prayer any more convincingly than this?  I suppose He can.  But let us not ignore the obvious.  God is working in this place and He is working through His people to accomplish His will!  Continue to pray for guidance, strength, and willingness to be an instrument of the Lord and to be a blessing to others.

            In Christ,                Pastor Stroup

STANDING IN THE NEED OF PRAYER

Please continue to pray for those you find listed in need of prayer elsewhere in this newsletter.

At the same time, consider this.  An old song goes, “Not my brother, not my sister, but it's me, O Lord, standing in the need of prayer.”  And so it is.  Perhaps the most natural prayers are those we pray for ourselves, each of us, individually, speaking to God on our own behalf.  Throughout August pray for yourself, for the things you need, even for the things you want.  Pray for the things that would make you a better disciple of Christ.  Pray for a constant strengthening of faith and commitment to serving the Lord.  Pray for opportunities to witness to the life, death, resurrection, and love of Jesus.  Pray for doors to open which will allow you to serve your Lord with joy.  Pray for motivation to open Scripture and read it, even small sections at a time.  Then pray for understanding and appreciation of what God reveals of Himself in what you have read.  Perhaps follow that up with prayer for direction in how to respond to what God is saying in His Word.

And in all things, give thanks.  Pray with joy and thanksgiving for the many ways in which the Lord continues to bless you, realizing that as He blesses you, you are to be a blessing to others.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE!

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

"And now, friends, we ask you to honor those leaders who work so hard for you, who have been given the responsibility of urging and guiding you along in your obedience. Overwhelm them with appreciation and love"

On Sunday, August 14 St. John’s Church & School will celebrate Pastor Stroup’s 10 Year Anniversary following the 9:00 am service.  Please join us in offering thanksgiving to Pastor and his wife Sue for their service to St. John’s on this special morning.

We will have a “Celebration Book” for all to note memories, thanksgivings, and words of encouragement for all to share.

If you would like to sign the book, it will be available before and after Sunday’s 9:00 am Church Service. If you would like to write a note in advance, please send it off or drop it in the church office by Friday, August 12.

Evy’s Café will be offering a morning brunch of French toast, bacon, fruit and sweets along with coffee and juice refreshments.

Remember your leaders who first taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and trust the Lord as they do."

ST. JOHN’S GIRL SCOUTS

The Girl Scouts are collecting aluminum cans from now until December 31 in a campaign to fund their new Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois program center off I-90/Hwy 20 in Cherry Valley, IL

Needless to say, they will need to collect a “jillion” cans to reach their goal., so if you would like to donate your cans, you may drop them off in the Activity Center – look for a container identified as Girl Scout can collection; or, if you have no way of delivering your cans, call Char @847-854-2304 for a pick up.  Thank you for helping the Girl Scouts!

THE GREAT GIVER

By Annie Johnson Flint

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,

He sendeth more strength, when the labors increase,

To added affliction, He addeth His mercies,

To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,

When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,

When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,

Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,

His power no boundary known unto men;

For out of His infinite riches in Jesus

He giveth and giveth and giveth again.

A KITCHEN WISH

The ladies in the kitchen are hoping that anyone who has borrowed serving plates from the kitchen, those special ones we use to serve desserts (cookies, cakes, coffee cake, etc.), will return them.  If there are none ‘found’, it would be very much appreciated if some generous folks would kindly purchase a plate or donate one from their kitchen cabinet. (The kitchen also needs vegetable bowls if you might have extras.)

Thank you for considering the needs of St. John’s kitchen -  All the more urgent as the dates of those special fall dinners approach.      (Marilyn)

SCHOOL HOUSE NEWS!

Dear Lord.

The room looks so empty

With its block walls and the

Oh-so-straight mortar joints.

Empty bulletin boards, assorted cardboard boxes filled with dog-eared teacher manuals, and various teaching aids packed away.

The halls are empty and dark.

Students and their families are gone now that summer vacation is here.

But I wanted to stay and say

“Thank You”, Lord.

Thank you for giving me patience, thank you for giving me a sense of humor, thank you for wisdom, energy, and opportunities.

THANK YOU FOR TRUSTING ME!

Oh yes Lord, thank you for summer vacation.

CELEBRATING 135 YEARS…

of educating the children of both our congregation and surrounding communities!

For 135 years SjS has laid the academic and moral foundation to thousands of children who have gone on to universities, colleges, and military academies.

Students who have become doctors, lawyers, ministers, missionaries, teachers, business leaders, builders, laborers, moms, dads, AND faithful laity of HIS church.

During these times of concern please continue to pray for your school, your church, your family, and yourself.

So, I invite you to join our school family NOW where YOUR children will know ALL of their classmates names and not get lost in a classroom of OVER 30, or more, students.  Where YOUR children WILL BE challenged to work at their ability and not be taught in a “cookie cutter” institution.  AND, where your children WILL BE taught and develop within a Christian environment with the Word of God used as our moral compass.

Mission India

Interested in knowing some of the things that went on during pastor's trip to India?  Want to see  the one true God at work in a largely idol worshiping nation?  Concerned how effectively mission dollars can be spent?  Wondering how to get the Gospel to people of many different languages and limited literacy?  Care to see a smoothly run organization provide materials, training, and resources for Christian outreach?

You need to know more about Mission India!  Pastor will be presenting some of the details in stories, pictures, movies, snacks, and Q & A.  You are welcome to join others on Thursday, June 9, at 7:00 pm. in/near the preschool room to get the scoop.  This program is sponsored by the Ladies of St. John's, and is open to everyone.  There is no cost or obligation.  However, there is a risk:  our Lord may charge you and obligate you to respond.

The Church Planter program of Mission India has changed from a two-year, $3500 commitment per individual, to a one-year, $2500 commitment per individual.  The training has been compressed, but the goals for each individual remain unchanged.  Literacy classes and Children's Bible Clubs are included in what they do.  You may remember that we supported 14 Church Planters with $49000 over two years.  We could support a full class of 10 this time for $25000.  I know it is still a lot of money, especially in these challenging economic times.

My assessment is that I have seen no mission organization more effective in bringing the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost than Mission India.  Your previous support reached 17000 families, brought 1200 new believers, and started 42 churches, daughter congregations to St. John's.  And the work begun continues on, now supported by local sources.

Perhaps you would once again consider making a one year commitment to support Mission India in outreach to the unbelieving masses of India.  We will tally the results and inform Mission India of what we will provide.

Concern has been voiced that your support of this outreach, above and beyond your budgeted giving, results in a decrease in giving for general purposes.  General unrestricted giving is needed to cover our ongoing expenses of ministering in this community, and is very important.  Please do not commit to Mission India if it will negatively impact your normal giving.

That being said, if you are willing and able, please fill in the tag below and deposit in the offering plate some time soon.

Thank you and God's blessings.  Pastor Stroup

From the Trustees:

In the coming months you will hear from one of us on a very important matter for the continued stewardship of God’s property. Our heating and air conditioning vendor, who has repeatedly been donating his labor and many parts, gave us the news that he doesn’t think he can keep the main heating/AC unit running in the Activity Center through this winter. For the past few years he has found parts, built parts and done everything he can to keep us from incurring the expense of a new unit, but it would appear that we are now out of options. The Trustees have been prayerfully considering what we should do, but it looks like it will be a major expense to replace the unit. We are currently seeking alternative opinions and will then go out for bid if a new unit is our only choice. At this time we don’t know what those costs might be, but initial estimates are between 50-100 thousand dollars to replace, but we’ll know all that before we come before you. We ask for your prayerful consideration of what we, as fellow stewards, can do.

We have also recently signed a contract to purchase our electricity in bulk, from a wholesalers, at commercial rates, which should reduce our energy costs. We already have a bulk natural gas contract from the same firm. A benefit to the program is that as a member of our congregation you will be able to use the same supplier at home. Those details are being worked out but we expect to get you some additional information on that in the June/July timeframe.

You no doubt have noticed that the mobile classroom has been removed and replaced by a nice pile of beautiful black dirt. One of our members, who is very handy with a backhoe, has been grading the area and we hope to plant some grass seed there soon.

Upcoming items include some tuck pointing repairs on the bell tower and church, as well as sealing the parking lots around the church.

If you have any suggestions for the concerns listed above, or if you notice an area in need of repair, please feel free to mention it to any of us at church.

A Special Thank you!!

For VBS this year, we will be transforming our church into a scene straight from Nazareth, and we asked for help from the members of St. John's to accomplish this... and we were blessed! First, we received a very generous amount of fabric donations, which was more than we had hoped for - thank you to everyone who donated fabric. Then, thanks to our fabulous "Seamstress Crew", we now have over 50 tunics that will be worn by the volunteers. Thank you so much to Spike Halsall, Faye Porstner, Lynne Sherman, Carol Yocius and Nancy Allen (our partner with Country Covenant Church) for all of your time and talents! You've played a big role in making this year's VBS truly amazing, and we're so grateful for your help.

Also, our Wishing Well has been receiving donations on a regular basis - thank you so much to those of you who took the time to purchase items we need for VBS. St. John's has a generous heart, and we're blessed to have such wonderful support of our program. Thank you!

REPORT ON FUNDRAISER FOR ANNA

Anna's fundraiser on Sunday, May 15 was absolutely beautiful.  The support from the Church and School was priceless.  Thank you for your prayers, efforts and generous donations.  Thank you to those who graciously volunteered cooking in the kitchen, busing tables, serving food, selling pop, being a host/hostess, selling tickets and helping with the silent auction.  Thank you to all who baked brownies, cakes, cookies, and donated beverage items.  Thank you to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.  The Girl Scouts earned badges on Sunday for their efforts.  They served beverages, bused tables and made ribbons for each person.  The Boy Scouts generously helped with busing tables and clean up.  Thank you also to the 5th graders who made stars and sold them for Anna.  This was truly a group effort which is why it was so successful.  On behalf of Anna, Thank you!!

PINOCHLE/CARD/GAME NIGHT

AT ST. JOHN’S

Our next scheduled time for fun and games is: Saturday, June 18th .     (If you attend

We meet in the activity center at 7:00 p.m. offering prizes of free pinochle, fun, fellowship and refreshments.

We’d Love to See You there!

Dear St. John’s Family,

I would like to thank each and every one of you because I feel that you all are taking this amazing journey with me and God.  I thank God for each and every day, and I thank Him for all of you.  It is because of God and all your prayers, cards, words of encouragement, hugs, love, and yummy meals that I have made it this far.

The Sunday that St. John’s Church and School held a fundraiser for me was such a special day; one that I will never forget.  A special “Thank You” to all of the St’ John’s School classrooms, Anna’s Angels (a.k.a. St. John’s Girl Scout Troops), and St. John’s Boy Scout Troop for their part in making Sunday so special.

It was so nice to be surrounded by the people I see every day as well as those I haven’t seen for years.  You all play such a special place in my life.

I want you to know just how much each and every one of you means to me, but believe it or not, I’m at a total loss for words.  So, I’ll just say “Thank You” and “I love you all,” from the bottom of my heart.

God’s Blessings,

Anna Noble

PLEASE PRAY

Please continue to pray for those you find listed in need of prayer elsewhere in this newsletter.

Please pray for our Vacation Bible School (VBS).  Pray that all plans may be made and brought to fruition.  Pray that the community may be reached with invitations to attend and participate.  Pray that leaders and organizers may be blessed and be a blessing to all the children God brings to our Nazareth adventure.  Pray that the Gospel of Jesus Christ shines clearly through all that goes on during this exciting week.  Pray that all is done in Jesus' name to the glory of the Father.

Our friends in Christ,

As a family we will forever be thankful for the prayers, support and meals you have given us during our son Michael’s recent illness. We can say without hesitation and with joy in our hearts that his survival and ongoing recovery is a miracle of God. God heard the many prayers and has been restoring Mike ever since.

As a result of a heat stroke Mike’s prognosis was not good in that his liver and kidneys were failing due to an internal temperature of nearly 107°. Mike was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Mountain View Hospital in Las Cruces, NM on Thursday, February 17th. By Saturday, the doctors began suggesting we consider flying Mike to Phoenix to
the liver transplant hospital. As we now know, a person cannot survive without a functioning liver, however, as we now also know, the liver is the only organ that God designed to regenerate itself. There are no surgeries or medications that can create liver function and Mike’s medical team could do nothing to make it better, but then the original manufacturer of Mike stepped in and started His miracle. Mike’s liver slowly started to repair itself and his liver function numbers got better each day. As we saw improvement in the liver, our concern (although God had a handle on it) became the kidney’s. On Sunday of that first week Mike had undergone dialysis (machine doing the work of the kidneys) and had dialysis again on Monday and Wednesday. Then, we saw the continuation of His miracle as Mike’s own kidney’s started to output more fluids. From this point the numbers for both the liver and kidney’s steadily improved.

The medical care Mike received was excellent but the fact of the matter is that he is being restored solely by the healing power of God, and is truly a miracle. Your constant prayers seeking a miracle were answered by a loving God.

On the second day in the hospital Mike was visited by his football teams’ chaplain who talked about Psalms 50. God reminds us in that Psalm that we cannot give him stuff because “everything that moves in the field” is already His. Rather, He wants the sacrifice of our thanksgiving. Then in verse 15 God says “call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me”. We all called on God in the day of Mike’s trouble – and God delivered him. We have seen with our own eyes one of God’s miracles – to this we say “… to Him be all glory”.

God’s Blessings to each of you!

The family of Mike Yocius

 Day School News

As the 2010-2011 school year closed we were once again amazed

that it was the end of the year!  How quickly the time had passed since August.  We have witnessed growth in our students; physically, cognitively, and Spiritually!

We are already working on plans for next year; determining the very best way to serve our students.

We are thankful for the on-going support of our St. John's family

which enables us to do His work. We wish everyone a blessed summer.

We ask you to pray for your church and school, as we most certainly

will pray for our St. John's families.

ALGONQUIN, ILLINOIS

NEWSLETTER

May 2011

Fellow Redeemed,

Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!

This acclamation of Easter triumph and joy resounds in our hearts throughout the year. We are privileged to know Jesus Christ died and rose again for every sinner, that all who believe in Him have eternal life. We are also privileged and obliged to share this Good News with others, so they too may come to the saving knowledge of the world's only Lord and Savior.

Our recent Lenten worship services were themed on “The Sign of Jonah.” The same Lord, who is the One greater than Jonah and who gave His life that the whole world might be saved, enabled reluctant Jonah to bring the message of salvation to people who did not know the one true God. In so doing, a whole city numbering over 120,000 persons turned to the Lord and was saved. If you haven't yet taken 20 minutes to read Jonah, please dust off your Bible now and do so.

We follow in the footsteps of the reluctant, even rebellious, prophet. Remember his one sentence sermon? Perhaps the single line opening this article should be our sermon. There is no better news to proclaim. Who knows? God may use our efforts to open sinful hearts to turn to the Lord and be saved.

We can do this personally in our families and among our neighbors. We can do this corporately through our congregation's reach into the community. We can do this as the body of Christ by supporting, through mission giving, those who strive to bring the message of salvation to others. Such is the work of Mission India, where your voice has had a very significant and measurable impact.

Ten million Indian children are hoping that a Children's Bible Club starts in their neighborhood or village; trained teachers are needed. Three hundred thousand adults are waiting for Literacy Classes to start; trained teachers are needed. Four thousand Christians have been recommended for Church Planter training; teachers are needed. People long for the Gospel. Our support over two years has done much in India to provide needed resources to proclaim:

Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!

PLEASE PRAY

Please continue to pray for those you find listed in need of prayer elsewhere in this newsletter.

Please pray for our congregation, that following the gathering of leaders at the LIVING STONES RETREAT, we may strive to accomplish those things that would please God in this place. The Lord has blessed us with many resources to be used to His glory. Yet there always seems to be a need for more people, more time, more money, more space, more involvement.

Lord, help each of us individually to live up to our capacity to serve you through the time, talent, and treasures with which you have blessed us. Likewise, for our congregation, Lord, that in our community, St. John's may serve you to our full capacity to be a beacon of saving light that grows brighter each day. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

SPREAD THE WORD!

The 21st Annual McHenry County Children’s Health and Safety Fair has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake.

During this special and unique event, children and parents will have the opportunity to be educated in an innovative and entertaining way by representatives from more than fifty programs and organizations. This year’s fair also offers parents a convenient and affordable opportunity to obtain required school immunizations and dental exams before the beginning of the 2011-12 school year. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. A signed parent permission slip must be brought with any child under 18 that is not accompanied by their parent/guardian

Immunizations and dental exams will be provided for school age children on a first come first serve basis. Parents must bring the child’s updated immunization record in order to receive required immunizations. Each immunization will cost $15. Dental exams will be offered at a reduced cost of $10.00. Medicaid/All Kids will be accepted. Also, a limited number of school physicians will be available, by appointment only, for children of low-income, uninsured or underinsured families. The cost will be $20.00. Physical appointments can be scheduled by calling the Family Health Partnership Clinic at 815-334-8987.

Servants of Christ,

Many of you heard me speak on God's call to Abram from Genesis 12, the weekend of March 19-20.  I'll remind you that the last promise spoken to Abram in v3, that “in you all families of the earth will be blessed,” points directly to Jesus Christ, God's Son, and that these words reiterate God's promise to redeem the world (see Genesis 3:15).

Consider also, how we often summarize God's promises to Abram from Genesis 12:2 with the words “Blessed to be a blessing.”  This was not only true for Abram (later renamed Abraham), but also for you and me.  Please take a few moments to consider briefly how you have been blessed . . .  Perhaps think even deeper . . .  Many are the ways.  Naming a few, perhaps you included these blessings: eternal life, life itself, loved ones, Christian fellowship, health, wealth, freedom.

Whatever the blessings you noted, consider now . . .  How am I to use these blessings to be a blessing to others?  Having been blessed, what shall I do to be a blessing to someone else?  Your answers may be as many and as varied as your blessings, but you cannot be without an answer.  You simply must be a blessing.

One way to be a blessing is to serve: serve your fellow man, serve your family, serve your church, serve your employer, serve those in need or in crisis, serve your community.  Do something with what you have and who you are that will benefit somebody, even though they don't expect it or deserve it.  That was Christ all the way to the cross!  “Take up your cross,” He tells us.

Is the Church always asking for a bigger piece of you?  No bigger than Christ has already demanded of you.  He wants your ALL because He gave His all.  There is much to be done within His body, the Church, and through His body, the Church.  What shall be your part?  How shall you be a blessing?

With thanks to all who serve . . .

            Your Servant in Christ,

                Pastor Stroup

Friends in Christ,

I bring you greetings from friends far away, from those I have met on my previous trip to India, and from those new acquaintances I recently made.  Specifically, Mr. Daniel Raju, Mr. C. Daniel, and Mr. A. C. Anil send you greetings, as I had the opportunity to meet with them personally and discuss their work.  They are three of the fourteen church planters supported by St. John's over the course of the pat two years.  They have News of Jesus Christ with family, friends, and neighbors.  The several churches they were able to start are now supporting them in their continued work to bring Christ to the people of India.

They know each other, as part of the same class of ten, and traveled about 250 miles just to meet with me at the Mission India headquarters.  We talked for an hour or so with the aid of a translator, and each one related to me an account of God's miraculous physical healing to someone to whom  they were ministering. These miracles seem to act as a magnet to draw attention to the power of our Lord.  As people want to know more about a God so powerful, the Law and Gospel can be shared and many are moved by the Holy Spirit to receive Christ as Savior.  In addition, I believe the miracles act as a confirmation to the Church Planters, that the work they are doing is right, necessary, and blessed by the God we worship together.

I shared with them some things prepared by St. John's School students and by member W. Wilke.  They were pleased to receive the written greetings, intrigued to see pictures of our students, school, and church, and grateful for the cross presented to each one as a token of our fellowship in the Gospel.  Another of the American subgroups visited one of their churches and the home of one these church planters, and was promptly shown the new cross hanging on the wall of his home.

Your willingness to support these Christians who proclaim Jesus Christ in their part of the world is bearing much fruit.
